This really DOES suck…. We’re seeing a lot of this – too much of it – we’re afraid. We were wondering just this morning how many stores are going to close by 8 or 8:30 tonight so their employees can see fireworks. Hmmmmmm. Hopefully you – or someone there – has been able to bring a little inspiration celebration today to celebrate the concept of independence, no matter how dependent most of us are on our jobs.
Sorry your job is sucky enough to require you to work on holidays. But with your “help” you might see a difference come Labor Day….
The weather is supposed to get bad today! I’m so glad I’m off, but definitely thinking about those who will be traveling to and from in this icky weather today!
It really sucks, doesn’t it? I like to carry a picture of a bed on my phone so I can look at it every so often and remind myself how it’s a little closer til when I can get to spend some time in it. The way to get through a day is to either hunker-down and let it fly by or – on days like these – let the countdown begin!
OMGosh – 10 HOURS!!!! What a loooooooooon day. No wonder you want to go home. We’re hoping you’re getting an extra break or two in there for you dedication + the length of your day! Don’t be afraid to tell your supervisor you need to step away for a few minutes (even if that means s/he may have to cover for you while you step aside). Just be sure not to whine or to use the words “can’t” or “won’t.” Maybe something like, “Since this is an extra long day, I need to step away for just a minute to clear my head and get another burst of energy.” My guess is they’d like to do the same thing. If they shoot back with something like, “Well I’d like to do that too”; just take a deep breath and tell them you “wish you could that too … so the must know how much we – I – need those few minutes.” Don’t get mad. Don’t get smarmy or smart-tailed. And before you ask, decide how much time to renew you need: 10 minutes? 15? Ask for what you need.
Am I the only one who hates having to wake up bright and early to make sure you have enough time to get dressed and warm your vehicle up before heading out to work??? Cold, early mornings are not fun!
No, you’re not alone…. It seems to take at least 15 minutes longer to get to work on cold mornings and 30-45 minutes longer on those days with snow and/or ice – and that’s not taken into account the drive-time depending on the road conditions.
This MJS employee will take hot and early – even hot and late – any day!!!!!
For now, guess we’re just going to have to get up earlier for a few more weeks…. Official Countdown to Spring: 69 days!
Ugh! Sometimes those of us who work M-F forget to thank those who work Saturdays and Sunday. So … thank you!
Some of us at MJS work weekends, too, and we’ve found it a little easier when we think of them as 2 of our 3 days of work (maybe they’re our Monday and Tuesday … or Wednesday and Thursday. We know it’s hard when our friends or family are “off” playing around or having a good time without us … but keep your eye on the clock and countdown the hours until you can get out of there. And then go do something fun!
My job doesn’t suck; however, the people I work with do! It’s expected that I and a select few others give 120% effort to make up for those who only give 80% effort. In fact, it’s often joked about and it makes me extremely resentful of my bosses! I really like the work that I do and make decent money, but I work in such a dysfunctional environment that I dread being at work every day.
This is one of those tough situations. Try looking at what extra you’re doing, tally how you spend your time – particularly doing someone else’s work, identify how someone else “can” (MJS knows it’s should) be doing … but better to use that word “can” with supervisors), be able to show how you’ll be even more productive without someone else’s load, and then schedule a conversation with your direct supervisor to discuss it.
And when we work in such dysfunctional environments it’s really important to destress after work by doing something nice for yourself. But try to avoid drinking as your letdown – at least on an every night basis because it will only numb you and keep you from changing your situation … which is really what you want to do. Isn’t it?
Ugh! I hate these kind of days. I once worried I’d have a permanent bruise on my forehead after falling asleep and onto my desk (at least I was sitting down!). I’ve found these tips to be helpful: get up and walk around the “office” or “floor” or wherever you are. If it’s not too nasty outside, step out the door of your building and take a few deep breaths. If you can, walk quickly around the building – fast enough for folks to think you’ve only gone down the hallway to the washroom … if it’s cold, it’s even better. If you can figure out how to sneak away for 12-20 minutes, take a quick nap – I like the “Sleep Now!” app – it’s even got a nap setting already on it. Sometimes I nap in my car. If your supervisor’s an ok person, ask him/her if you can step away for a few minutes.
Above all, hang in there. The day is going to end! Promise.
You know you love your job when you can love it even on the days you don’t like it. I wonder if anyone out there has a job that doesn’t ever have any downs….
I really like your FB pic with the woman in the ball pit. My day back to work was yesterday and there were those moments I felt just like that: stuck in a pit with a bunch of balls I dropped all around me. :-C Thanks for the smile today!
Just hang in there…. We all have to eventually get out of the pit – even if it’s when some adult-of-adults type drags us out kicking and screaming. 😀
Today was the last straw! My boss again yelled at me in front of our customer. He told me to get his kit and make sure we took it to the job. I grabbed the box that was clearly labeled as his kit but when we arrived to the site he opened the kit and it was not what was supposed to be in the box. He just started yelling and screaming and telling me that I got the wrong thing. I can’t help that he doesn’t put things back where they go. I feel angry that he can blame me for this type of stuff and yell at me in front of people. This makes me look stupid and I just hate this place.
Dear “My-Boss-Yelled-at-Me-Again,” these are always HORRIBLE and embarrassing situations. If it’s any consolation, though, know your boss is the one who looks stupid…. Our guess is the customer was just as – maybe more – uncomfortable than you were. Keep your cool and don’t do anything rash. If you aren’t already, start thinking about your options (do I stay or do I go?). In the next day or so we’ll have our From Suck to Success Tip Sheet ready for sign-up and it should have a few ideas for you. In the meantime, you might want to check out one of the blogs we’ve found interesting: Define What a Meaningful Job Means to You// HBR.org – Management Tip of the Day. And thank you for trusting your rant with us!
My job sux. I have to be at work 9 hours a day, but I get paid for 8. I don’t need or want an hour lunch, but they make it mandatory. I get the half hour thing, but this is cutting into my family time.
Dear “Only-Need-A-30-Minute-Break,” we definitely understand that the “business ” day does not always align with the “this is my real life and I have one” day. Remember, it is just business. The one-hour break makes certain that employees have breaks between work, but also makes sure that customers know when you will be there to assist during business hours. But, it never hurts to offer to try a new schedule where, perhaps you and another coworker stagger a 30 minute lunch break to provide office/phone coverage over the lunch hour. Family and personal time is important, so if you can’t take a shorter lunch break try to use part of the break to do something for your family. I like to record video message on my phone and send “shout-outs” to family and friends to let them know I’m thinking of them.
Another holiday spent on the clock.

Another Saturday on the clock.
Praying for all those that have jobs that require them to be outside when it’s yucky out!
The weather is supposed to get bad today! I’m so glad I’m off, but definitely thinking about those who will be traveling to and from in this icky weather today!
It’s been one of those days where I wish I were home in bed.

I swear this has been the longest 5 hours of my life and still 5 more to go. I just want to go Home!

I’m exhausted and ready to return back to bed! Seems as if my work day is never going to end.

I love my career choice!
I love your words “career” and “choice.” So often we fall into “jobs” without looking through our options. Good for you!
Hello! I’m a nurse! I currently do PDN and absolutely love it, but I hate working weekends!
You know you love your job when you can love it even on the days you don’t like it. I wonder if anyone out there has a job that doesn’t ever have any downs….

I plan to stand up for myself more in 2016! No more working through my lunches and leaving late without pay!
Good for you! And if you’re not on salary, remember it’s illegal to expect you to work without being on the clock!
